BEST PLACES TO STAY IN PUGLIA | APULIA ITALY

If you are looking for the best places to stay in Puglia, for a summer holiday, you can choose among these villages:

  • Polignano a mare
  • Monopoli
  • Marina di Ostuni
  • Otranto
  • Marina di Marittima
  • Gallipoli
  • Porto Cesareo
  • Marina di Pulsano

If you are interested in a seaside resort in southern part of Italy, where sunbathing and relaxing, Puglia, with its 865 km of coasts, is a perfect destination for people looking for beautiful beaches and crystal sea.
This article is written by my friend Lucia, who lives in Puglia.
best places to stay in Puglia
Best places to stay in Puglia

Holiday guide to Puglia, southern Italy: the best towns. What is the best town to stay in Puglia?  Where should I base in Puglia? Is Puglia worth visiting? Is Puglia a good place to holiday? Where to stay in Puglia as a base? Puglia destinations: is better Salento or Gargano?

BEST AREA TO STAY IN PUGLIA

The seaside resorts where I recommend to stay in Puglia are:
  • Gallipoli | perfect place to stay in Puglia for people interested in a lively and fun area.
  • Lecce is recommended for families with children.
  • Porto Cesareo chosen by those who love for the beautiful white sandy beaches.
  • Otranto is favored to people who prefer the Adriatic coast and it is also a lively seaside resort: the downtown and the clubs are stormed by tourists.
I'd recommend staying in each places at least 3 nights.

Italians' habits
Good to know: In August many hotels offer weekly stays only, especially in seaside resorts where a lot of Italians spend a week on the beach.
Usually, Italians book their summer holidays by Easter (except this year under Covid-19 pandemic) so if you want to be sure of finding the best, or cheapest, accommodation, it is better to reserve in advance.

WHERE TO STAY in PUGLIA

Staying in these seaside resorts is cheaper in May, June, September and October while in July and August the beaches and resorts are very crowded and accommodations more expensive. An ideal solution when deciding where to stay in Puglia is to choose a base and visit the nearby villages.

The Apulian coast is very varied. They range from the high cliffs of the Gargano and Mattinata to the small beaches nestled in the rocks of Monopoli, Ostuni, Otranto and Marina di Marittima until to Salento coast with the long and Caribbean Ionian beaches of Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo and Pulsano.

Most beautiful beaches in Puglia

  • Mattinata

The city of Mattinata has some of the most beautiful beaches in Puglia, protected from the north-west winds thanks to the high cliffs of Gargano.

Baia delle Zagare is the most famous beach in the Gargano coast and can be reached only by a pass from the Municipality of Mattinata or by staying in one of the hotels located in this village.

Hotel Baia Delle Zagare | This hotel is immersed in the Gargano National Park, set on a cliff overlooking Zagare Bay.

Mattinatela Bay is another fabulous area to relax and its long pebble beach, surrounded by the white cliff, is ideal for lovers of underwater activities.

Where to stay in Mattinata, best view?
Hotel Residence Il Porto | is perched on a hill overlooking the Mattinata Bay.

What is the best town to stay in Puglia?

  • POLIGNANO A MARE

Polignano is a famous city on the Adriatic sea, its views of the historical center overlooking the sea are among the most photographed and beautiful landscapes in Puglia. Here the singer Domenico Modugno was born.

Polignano a Mare by Tripadvisor

If you are looking for something of familiar and characteristic, I suggest you to stay in one of the houses with a terrace overlooking the sea in the center of old Polignano.

Where to stay in Polignano best view?
Dimora Talenti Guesthouse with an amazing view of the ocean.

base in Puglia
Lungomare Di San Vito by Tripadvisor

During the summer the nightlife in the center of Polignano is very active, so it is recommended for people looking for a lively place: there are many pubs, restaurants and discos frequented by VIPs and influencers.

Lama Monachile is the closest beach to the city, small and very popular both for tourists and locals.

Another area that I recommend where to find more privacy is San Vito beach, just 2 km from Polignano, where you can swim in front of a beautiful abbey founded in the 10th century.

Where to stay for the summer holidays in San Vito area?
Casale Porto Contessa is situated in a strategic area, in the hamlet of San Vito, distant almost 2.5 km from the town of Polignano a Mare

Monopoli

Bari beaches

Less known than Polignano, but equally romantic and characteristic is Monopoli.
Its historical center is one of the jewels of Puglia with a view of the port and the liveliness of the city. It is very frequented by local people, ideal for enjoying your holiday like a true Apulian.

To enjoy the city, I recommend staying in one of the B&B or guesthouses located in the historical center.

Which hotels in Monopoli have nice views?

Palazzo Indelli, got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Monopoli.

If you choose Monopoli as a destination for your summer holidays, do not miss the Capitolo beach: a resort with many beach clubs ideal for families with children. In the evening is good for the night life lovers.

To stay near the beach of Capitolo: Torre Cintola Natural Sea Emotions.

Some tourist residences offer also luxury and exclusive experiences in a beautiful Caribbean sea with maximum comfort and relax.

Ostuni

Ostuni, the famous white city of Puglia is 7 km away from the coast, so if you want to stay near the sea it is better to book an accommodation in Marina di Ostuni, Villanova and Costa Merlata.

Puglia Southern Italy
Ostuni

Where to stay in Ostuni?
La Piana Degli Ulivi located 2 km from Ostuni, with an amazing view.

This part of the coast is formed by many rocks and there are sandy coves called "the beaches of Costa Merlata".
You can choose from several coves, often uncrowded.

Puglia best beach
Costa Merlata beach is credited by Tripadvisor

For people who love unspoiled nature, they will enjoy to stay in the natural reserves of Torre Guaceto or the park of the coastal dunes: crystal clear sea and white beaches chosen by the Caretta Caretta turtles as nesting places.

You will spend magnificent days in absolute symbiosis with nature, lulled by the sound of the waves.

Where should I base in Puglia?

Otranto

Arriving in Salento, you will leave your heart among its beautiful medieval alleys and its towers of this fascinating city.

holiday guide to Puglia
Otranto, Salento | Puglia

Otranto overlooks the sea and it is possible to participate in one of the many cultural and naturalistic activities organized to discover its suggestive landscapes and surrounings.
Don't miss the Bauxite quarry, trust me! ;)

Where to stay in Otranto best accommodation?
The Hotel Miramare is set in an unbeatable location right in the heart of Otranto just a few metres from the golden sandy beach

Baia dei Turchi, 7 km from Otranto, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Puglia. A corner of paradise with white sand and crystal sea.
A wide range of resorts are located near the beach and in the Alimini Lakes area: a brackish lakes ideal for spending a relax day with the family.

My tip to stay Baia dei Turchi:Aparthotel Agriturismo Vigna Corallo. The sandy beach could be reached after a short walk through a wood.

Where should I base in Puglia?

Marina di Marittima / Castro Marina

We conclude the overview of the places on the Adriatic coast with Marina di Marittima and Castro Marina.
You can choose Marina di Marittima, if you want to stay far away from the tourist circuits where you can breathe the atmosphere of the most authentic Puglia, without artifice and frills.

There are not many accommodations here.

Relax and peace are assured and the location of the town is excellent for visiting the whole Salento peninsula. Suitable for travelling holidays.

Where to stay in Castro Marina?
Hotel Degli Ulivi overlooking the Gulf. Ideal as a base to make a tour to the southern area of Puglia.
Things to see: Cala dell'Acquaviva (photo below), a wonderful inlet inserted in the wild nature with cold springs ideal for cooling off during the hot summer days.

Palombara cave:  small suggestive cave located in a rocky coast. If you like a Caribbean sea with its amazing colours, I recommend this boat trip.

Gallipoli

We arrived on the Ionian Sea, on the other side of the "heel of Italy", where Gallipoli is its most popular area.

Puglia where to stay
Lido Punta della Suina credit by Tripadvisor

The city is famous not only for its ancient historical center (of Greek origin), but also for the nightlife on the beach especially in the high season such as Samsara beach.

Best accommodation Gallipoli
Costa Brada hotel with private beach 4 km from Gallipoli.

Gallipoli has two souls: in the daytime is ideal for families and relax in the beaches and the nighttime is perfect for who want to enjoy the music and dance on the beach under the starry sky of Salento.

Gallipoli offers a wide range of accommodation and I would advise you to choose a structure in Baia Verde (Hotel Risberg), an area along the "Gallipoli promenade" with has many services and ideal for families with children.

Do not miss the Punta della Suina beach, fine sand, crystal and calm water, pine forest ... what else?

Porto Cesareo Bay

Porto Cesareo is a small town in Salento area, not far from Gallipoli, in the center of a splendid protected marine and bordered by wonderful beaches like Punta Prosciutto, Spiaggia delle Dune and Torre Inserraglio.

Where to stay in Porto Cesareo beach front?
Hotel Blu next to private beach.

As well as Gallipoli, also this stretch of coast is very popular for the nightlife during the summer months, while the peace and relax is guaranteed in the low season. There is no shortage of beautiful beaches, for expample Torre Chianca beach (image below).

The beaches of Punta Prosciutto and Torre Lapillo are the most beautiful in the area, with services suitable for families with children.
The beach and the seabed have a beautiful white sand ideal for relax and play, but also for more lively activities such as snorkeling or diving to discover the hidden treasures on the bottom of the Mediterranean (I warn you that there are wrecks!).

Marina di Pulsano

is puglia worth a visit
Spiaggia di Lido Silvana credit by Tripadvisor

The last place where I recommend you to stay is Pulsano: a small village in the Gulf of Taranto with its 8 km of low and sandy coast, suitable for young and enderly people.
The sea is about 5 km from the city center and it is an ideal place for family holiday.

Lido Silvana is certainly the best beach suitable for families who need a wide range of beach services, clear water, fine sand and a total immersion in the nature of Salento.

Where to stay in Marina di Pulsano near Lido Silvana beach?
 Recidence The Garden

For the wild nature lovers and unspoiled places Luogovivo and Le Canne are two other places to consider. Crystal clear sea and absolute privacy, you can anjoy an holiday experience like a real local.

HOLIDAYS in PUGLIA

- useful info to avoid surprises -

☑️ Public transport is not very organized, so if you plan to take a holiday in Puglia it is better to arrive by car or rent a car in the airport.
☑️ The tourist centers have maps and useful information about events, activities...
☑️ July and August are very popular and intensive months, so lots of beaches are crowded and the temperatures are usually very high.
☑️ If you choose Puglia for your holiday you must consider the wind. Puglia is a windy region, especially subject to the cold winds of Tramontana, coming from Balkans, and the hot Scirocco from Africa. The wind affect expecially the Adriatic coast and less the Ionian sea.
Now you are able to choose the right location to fully enjoy your holiday as a real Apulian.

  • Sestri Levante
  • Rapallo
  • Lerici
  • Santa Margherita Ligure
  • Cinque terre
  • Bogliasco
  • Sori
  • Recco
  • Avegno
  • Uscio
  • Lavagna

WHICH IS THE BEST AREA TO STAY IN LIGURIA?

Today we are talking about the Eastern Riviera of Liguria, starting from Genoa to the Tuscan border.
This area is called Riviera di Levante and it includs famous and suggestive places and villages such as: Golfo Paradiso, Golfo del Tigullio, Cinque Terre and Golfo dei Poeti.

Liguria is not only a destination for summer holiday and beautiful beaches where to sunbathe, but you can dedicate yourself to other activities all year long like hiking and cultural tourism especially in very well-known places like Cinque Terre, Portofino and Porto Venere.

IMPORTANT: in this area it is need to pay attention to the limited traffic zone (ZTL) and the lack of parking spaces. To avoid problem, it is better to stay in a hotel or B&B that can provide you the "pass" to enter in ZTL zone without taking fines and a private park, if you travel by car.

Best area to stay in Liguria

Camogli

Camogli can be easily reached by train. It is a nice fishing village famous for the Fish festival which takes place every year on the second Sunday of May (a huge pan where tons of fish are cooked for all people).

Best villages in Liguria

The small stony beach is surrounded by typical colorful ligurian houses with narrow streets where you can discover flavors and glimpses of this beautiful enchanted village. If you get hungry, I suggest you to taste the famous focaccia for sale in many local "focaccerie" (the most popular and famous is the Revello focacceria in Via Giuseppe Garibaldi) and/or even a mixed fried cone.
From the marina you can take ferries to San Fruttuoso abbey.

Camogli is situated in a convenient position for visit both the east and the west part of Liguria and it is also ideal for enjoy the sea and the beautiful surroundings.

Portofino

Portofino is a pearl set in a small inlet.

best area to stay in Liguria.

There is only a busy road that runs along the sea and few expensive car parks, so it is better to reach Portofino by sea.
This pretty port is small and can be visited in a few hours, without rushing, getting lost in its narrow streets.
There are many boats and yachts, restaurants and a breathtaking view across the bay.

I recommend staying there until the sunset when the village acquires charm and romance.

Portovenere and the Gulf of Poets

The Gulf of Poets, also known as the Gulf of La Spezia, starts from Monte Marcello up to Portovenere and includes Lerici and the other 12 villages.
If you are looking for a place to visit this suggestive part of Liguria, you can stay in Portovenere (very touristic and characteristic) or in some cheaper accommodations in the port city of La Spezia (see map below).

Portovenere is an obligatory stop: beautiful and suggestive with its roman church overlooking the sea where you can enter to cool off a bit especially in the summer.
portovenere italy

Portovenere is also crossed by narrow streets, restaurants and small shops where you can buy typical products.

Best countries in Liguria

The parking spaces are quite expensive so if you want to stay here, I recommend you choose a structure with parking included and visit the neighboring villages and the Cinque Terre by ferry or public transports.

Which hotels are the best ones to stay at in Portovenere?
Grand Hotel Portovenere, Hotel Belvedere, and Albergo Ristorante Paradiso are some of the popular hotels in Portovenere.
From Portovenere start the Path of Poets (about 45 km), you must follow the white and red sign of the Alta Via del Golfo. The path is suitable for all trekking lovers who want enjoy magnificent views.

Sestri Levante

Another ideal place to stay in Liguria: Sestri Levante which has a hollow beach surrounded by colorful historic buildings that make it suggestive.

From the railway station it is possible to take a train to visit Monterosso and the other villages included in the "Cinque Terre".
Trains are direct and frequent every 20 and 30 minutes.

Which hotels are the best ones to stay at in Sestri Levante?
Villa Agnese, Hotel Genova, and Relais San Rocco are some of the popular hotels in Sestri Levante.

Rapallo

If you are looking for a nice place, with a relaxing beach, a well-preserved historical center and quite affordable prices, you can choose Rapallo as a base for your trips in Liguria.
Outside the historic center the city is quite urbanized but the pedestrian area full of historic shops and the promenade worth a visit.

Which hotels in Rapallo have nice views?
Hotel Vesuvio, Hotel Primo Sole, and Excelsior Palace Hotel got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Rapallo.

Santa Margherita Ligure

A few kilometers from Rapallo there is Santa Margherita Ligure, an elegant seaside resort between Rapallo and Portofino.

The historical houses surround the stony beach and there are good level of restaurants and shops.
If you love walking, you can easily get to Portofino (about 30 minutes on foot): the coastal road offers breathtaking views.

Which hotels in Santa Margherita Ligure have nice views?

Hotel Laurin, Hotel Continental, and Grand Hotel Miramare got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Santa Margherita Ligure.

Lerici

Another seaside resort stormed in summer but ideal to visit in other periods mostly during the spring.

ligurian coast where to go
Questa foto di Lerici è offerta da TripAdvisor

I point out that in the summer months arriving by car in Lerici can be a problem since there is a ZTL (transit ban). If you go by car to Lerici, you can park in the large car park of the Venere Azzurra or La Vallata (both for a fee).

From Lerici there is a beautiful promenade that runs along the sea from which it is possible to admire the castle of San Terenzo in the distance. The fine sandy beach and the gently sloping sea make it an ideal place for tourists traveling with children.

Which hotels in Lerici have nice views?Piccolo Hotel Del Lido got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Lerici.
Which hotels in Lerici are good for families? Many families visiting Lerici loved staying at Hotel Il Giglio.

Cinque Terre

This short stretch of coast called "Cinque Terre" is made up of five famous villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. They can be visited by train or ferry  buying a single ticket valid all day long.

liguria where to go
Monterosso beach
These villages are different to each other but with a common charm: coloured buildings, nice small squares, typical shops, wondeful landscape and small characteristic beaches.

I visited them a torrid day in July and I must say that it was really full of tourists. I think it is better to visit these villages in May, June, September and October.
To see the famous "Cinque Terre" you can stay in Monterosso as a base that has a beautiful beach.

Which hotels in Monterosso al Mare have nice views?
Hotel Meublè Agavi, Stella Della Marina, and Albergo Suisse Bellevue got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Monterosso al Mare.

Lavagna

Seaside resort with beautiful beaches and its own railway station.
You can stay here if you are looking for an area with more affordable prices than other places listed in this article that are more "renowned" and therefore expensive.
What are some popular places to stay around Liguria?
Questa foto di Lungomare di Lavagna è offerta da TripAdvisor

It has a beautiful historic center and a shopping street (via Roma). From the avenue that runs along the sea (towards the Cavi di Lavagna hamlet) you can see the promontory of Portofino and Sestri Levante

In Cavi di Lavagna there is the largest beach in Riviera di Levante.
Booking.com

Bogliasco

In the eastern part of Genoa there is a little knowed place: Bogliasco, a seaside resort surrounded by colorful Ligurian houses. It has small hollow beaches and several clubs and restaurants.
In front of the nautical club of Bogliasco there are 2 beaches, one of sand and one of pebbles, both with free showers.

Country House Agriturismo Le Pale

Best place to base for visiting Liguria

The Pontetto cliff (town between Bogliasco and Pieve Ligure) is full of tourists during the summer season.

How to reach the Pontetto cliff?

It is necessary to reach the Pontetto railway station, take a characteristic Ligurian "crêuza" (typical narrow path or mule track) that go down towards the sea.

Sori

A seaside resort located in the bay of Golfo Paradiso. If you want to enjoy the sea this is the right place: there is entertainment, sports and music for everyone, including the famous Jazz Festival.

In Sori there are some free beaches, equipped with showers and 3 bathing establishments. There is the municipal swimming pool and the Sailing Club.
Sori overlooks a pebble beach and is the second largest beach after Cavi di Lavagna.

For trekking lovers there are two panoramic routes: one path leads to the top of Mount Sant'Apollinare and another to Pieve Alta.
👉 Bed and Breakfast Villa sul Mare Great for Two Travelers. Beachfront

Recco

From Sori, the Aurelia state road continues to Recco, a town located west of the Portofino promontory. During the Second World War it was destroyed by bombing then it was rebuilted.

Recco has earned the title of "gastronomic capital of Liguria", with 3,000 seats at the table in restaurants, trattorias and "focaccerie" (similar to pizzerias but selling the typical focaccia). The credit goes to the famous "focaccia di Recco" with cheese, celebrated with a party on the fourth Sunday of May, with free focaccia for all participants!

There are two bathing establishments in the center of the waterfront.
Recco beach is made of pebbles and not of sand.

Do you want to ride the waves? On this beach, with the construction of an underwater artifact, they created special conditions that form waves suitable for surfing.

Hotel Da O Vittorio. Great for Two Travelers.

Avegno

From Recco, a road climbs to Avegno (8 km away) is a discovery in the green hinterland.
If you prefer to escape from the coastal crowding of the summer months you can consider staying here.
The climate is mitigated by the sea and the breeze so it is suitable for promenade to the shadow of the olive trees.

Rooms and Breakfast Casa Balin: Less than 1.9 mi from Recco Train Station and the beach.

Uscio

From Avegno the road continues to Uscio. A hill town known for the Arnaldi colony: a large health and tourist complex with a magnificent view. An idea also for a romantic weekend.

Uscio is located on a tourist route that connects the animation of the coast with the quiet of the hill and offers easy access to peaceful holidays enjoying a good traditional cuisine. Ideal place for those who love to take long walks in nature among the green Tuscan hills remaining a few kilometers from the sea.

Bed and Breakfast La Margherita 2

Well, I hope have helped you in the choice. All the places listed are enchanting, so now you can only depart to discover this part of Italy full of wonderful villages.

If the article is useful to you, or you want to suggest this area to your friends and relatives, you can share the article with them.

BEST AREA TO STAY IN MILAN FOR NIGHTLIFE

BEST AREA TO STAY IN MILAN FOR NIGHTLIFE

  • Stay in the Navigli district if you are looking for nightlife in Milan. Here you can find the most popular "cocktail bars", trendy bars and clubs.

Navigli district is a convivial area where locals gather for an aperitif or an informal dinner with friends. It is one of the most popular and crowded meeting places in Milan after 6.00pm.
The prices are affordable: with around € 10 you have a drink and a huge buffet of dishes to choose from. Here in Italy we call it "Apericena".

At the end of the day, on the bank of the Naviglio Grande there is a whole set of tables and chairs ready to host people to meeting for a drink, who enjoy their post-work relaxation in one of the most fascinating glimpses of the whole city. The accommodations here are mostly railing houses within courtyards.

BEST AREA TO STAY IN MILAN FOR NIGHTLIFE

I stayed a night in an apartment on Naviglio view right above the premises where happy hour is held. The atmosphere is suggestive but the night is quite noisy especially on weekends for this advice to choose an accommodation located in a courtyard that has the most "sheltered" room to avoid hearing people talking all night long .

  • Best neighborhood Milan district design: Brera
  • Best neighborhood in Milan for tourists: Milan city center, Duomo
  • Best neighborhood for food and restaurants: Isola
  • Best neighborhood for cheaper accommodation: Città studi or Chinatown

  • Best neighborhood for fashion addicted: Via Montenapoleone

Where should I stay in Milan for shopping?
Where should I stay when visiting Milan?

Where should I stay when visiting Milan?

Milan Central Train Station

If you arrive or leave by train, you will be comfortable to look for an accommodation near the Milan train station.

Here my tip:

Hotel Ada - a short walk from the Central Station.

Booking.com Let's see together the description of the various areas that you can reach or where to stay even if many of them are not exactly economic:

  • Best area Milan for nightlife: Navigli

Stay in the Navigli district if you are looking for a young area of Milan, for the Fiori sul Naviglio event, Milan Choco Week and for the street antiques market.

Stay here if you are looking for Milan nightlife, the most popular "cocktail bars" and young people.

Where should I stay when visiting Milan?

This area has recently been redeveloped, on the occasion of the Expo, now it is invaded by young people. Modern area with various clubs, many bars and restaurants pleasant to walk along the streets parallel to the Naviglio.
In December you can find the Santa Claus Village and the floating ice skating rink.

👉 I recommend the Milano Navigli Apartment a stone's throw from the canals, but out of the chaos of nightlife.

  • Best neighborhood in Milan for design, art and creativity: Brera

  • Brera the Montmartre in Milan.

Stay in Brera for the Salone del Mobile, stay close to the Academy of Arts, visit the Brera market which takes place every third Sunday of the month.

Milan's most bohemian neighborhood of design, art and creativity is at home here in Milan. If you have an artistic soul I suggest you stay in Brera among art galleries, antique shops and clubs frequented mostly by artists.

Brera district photo is offered to TripAdvisor.

Which is the BEST TOWN to STAY in LAKE GARDA?

Which is the best area to stay in lake garda?

  • Sirmione
  • Salò
  • Peschiera
  • Lazise
  • Desenzano
  • Riva del Garda
  • Garda city

These are the best places to stay in lake garda for a long or short breaks.

Which is the best town on Lake Garda?

Let's start our trip...

Which is the best town on Lake Garda?

Hi I'm Moira, born and grew up in Italy. Today I'll talk about one of my favorite resort in Northern Italy for holiday.

where to sleep at Lake Garda
Sirmione

Best places to stay in lake garda

Personally I prefer 👉 to stay in Desenzano as a base for visiting the lake and going out in the evenings. There are various accommodations: apartment, starred hotel, and the downtown is full of bars, ice cream parlors, pizzerias, restaurants, events ...

⇨ If I want to sunbathe and swimming in the lake, I prefer to Manerba del Garda. I really like the view in this area: it was love at first sight. In fact I have already booked 2 weekends in July and August at this lakefront hotel. 👉 Manerba del Garda.

The beaches are pebbly, free or with the possibility to rent sunbeds and deckchairs, there is a kilometer walk along the coast and on the other side there are all the residences and campsites full of tourists.

👉 Self-catering lake Garda

Also nice to visit the "island of rabbits" (The island of San Biagio): an island far 200 meters from the coast can also be reached by walking through the stretch of water that separates it from the mainland. To do during the low tide.

Manerba

In the picture I was in the middle of Lake Garda just near the island of San Biagio. From here you can see a wonderful sunset.

  • Sirmione

Best place to stay in lake garda for couples

For those who prefer lively places, the most beautiful place in Garda is certainly Sirmione.
The village of Sirmione is as fascinating as it is crowded with tourists. One of the most famous and visited places of Garda thanks to the famous Aquaria Thermal SPA with its outdoor swimming pools heated in winter.

In the evening Sirmione lights up like a little Paris, there are numerous restaurants and bars for all tastes so if you want to stay in a lively center, even if small, I suggest you stay here. In summer it is very crowded especially on weekends. The season starts at Easter and lasts until the end of October.

Scaliger Castle, Sirmione

Tip: Choose an accommodation with parking included otherwise you will have to pay a parking space in this area and they are quite expensive.

If you are traveling in the summer, I suggest you to stay in this Holiday Village near Sirmione where the parking space is included in the price and you can enjoy a beautiful swimming pool.
Staying in the center of Sirmione is not comfortable, the area is a ztl (Limited traffic zone).
Better to stay just outside the Scaliger castle or in neighboring towns like Colombare and Lugana, it is less expensive. However, if you want to experience the magic of staying in the center of Sirmione, prefer this structure where you can park in the backyard, for free: ⇨ stay in Sirmione peninsula.

To know: There is a convenient shuttle bus service that from Colombare takes you directly in front of the Sirmione castle gate. The cost is € 1 each way per person (simple travel ticket can be purchased on the ground for € 1.00 or € 1.50 if you buy the ticket on board the bus).

What are the best cities to stay at in Lake Garda?

  • Salò

Salò is located in the south-west part of Lake Garda in the zone known as the Riviera dei Limoni: among the mountains, natural landscapes and tranquility.

The most touristic area of Salò, and the most characteristic, is enclosed in the historical center composed narrow streets, alleys and squares with ancient noble palaces, elegant shops, numerous restaurants and hotels. Surely, together with Riva del Garda, it is one of the most chic areas of the lake with its Art Nouveau buildings.

Salò, Garda lake

Beaches: In Salò you will find free beach equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas (if you want to pay the rental) and a part of the beach allowed for dogs.

Staying on Lake Garda can be quite expensive. If you want to save money, I advice you to look for an accommodation not just in front of the lake but in the neighboring countries. If you are looking for a place with reasonable prices to be on Lake Garda, with a nice terrace overlooking the lake and a garden overlooking the mountains, I suggest the House of one of the group members I manage on Facebook: Elsa Anselmini. She and her beautiful family are local experts who will help you by giving you tips on things to do and visit. Check availability 👉 Lake Garda holiday apartment.

  • Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is surrounded by mountains, the climate here will be more variable and cool compared to the southern countries of the lake (Desenzano, Sirmione ...) so if you are looking for a location with a more tolerable climate in summer, head here.

lago di garda
Riva del Garda view from the lake

Riva del Garda is the area indicated for those looking for a wide beach and / or a lover of water sports. The city is cosmopolitan, there are many German tourists. The historic center is as characteristic as all the villages on Lake Garda. There are a good number of accommodation, facilities and is a good starting point to see the upper part of Lake Garda and the neighboring Trentino towns.

alloggiare sul garda
Riva del Garda

I recently stayed in Riva del Garda (early January), I stayed in a very comfortable hotel near the lake and the historic center (but not in the ztl area).
It's called 👉 Grand Hotel Liberty.

There are various rooms with affordable prices to be a Grand hotel. Included in the price there was the use of the internal SPA (swimming pools and saunas) and the abundant breakfast with a very inviting buffet: mini krapfen (delicious), cakes, speck jams and local cheeses. There are often discount offers for booking a room. Good location for a romantic weekend.

  • Desenzano

Best area on Lake Garda for shopping

There are a few beaches in Desenzano and rather small. The most comfortable equipped with a bar and a sunbed and deck chair is located just outside the historic center and it is called "Desenzanino Sea side resort".
The local market takes place every Tuesday morning along the street overlooking the lake in the downtown core.
Along the coast there are also the most popular discos, pubs, clubs... for nightlife lovers.
I always stay around via Olimpia in one of the many apartments in this area because there are convenient parking lots (free in low season ). The accommodation along this area are near the beach like this B & B overlooking the lake. See the accommodations in the recommended area, in the map below ⇩:

  • Lazise and Peschiera

Garda where to sleep for theme parks

Lazise and Peschiera are the best places to stay to reach the most popular amusement park in this area from the best known Gardaland (located in Ronchi in the town of Castelnuovo del Garda) to Movieland (Lasize), Caneva world aquapark (located in Pacengo, fraction of Lazise). A few kilometers away from each other, as you can see in the map below.

Booking.com

They are 2 very pretty places. Villages full of narrow alleys, shops, restaurants, hotels. Both in Peschiera and Lasize you can find a corner where you can lie down to sunbathe but if you really want to suggest the widest and longest beach area, choose, without a doubt, Peschiera del Garda.
This apartment is 200 meters from the lakefront Mazzini ⇨ B & B in Peschiera .

  • Garda city

Garda is a village located on the east coast of the homonymous lake.
As you can see in the pictures, there is a nice old town also full of shops, bars, restaurants, hotels like all the villages of the lake as they are very touristy and visited.

garda piazza
Garda downtown

From the historical center a road runs along the lake where people, in some area without rocks, sunbathe. The photo below is not retouched, colors are just those of the lake that I photographed in one of my beloved walks.
If you want to stay in this area for a weekend, I recommend a modern B & B with parking included ⇨ best are to stay in Garda.

Garda lake panorama

Well, my tips are finished. I guided you to discover the 6 most popular villages of Garda where to stay.
Whatever your choice, I'm sure you'll be fine because they are all wonderful places.
