MONDAY

After flying to Gran Canaria, the best way to start a trip is to relax to recharge body and mind batteries.

Southern beaches in Gran Canaria

  • MASPALOMAS DUNES
  • ANFI DEL MAR
Maspalomas dunes is one of the best attraction in Gran Canaria, so prepare your camera and enjoy yourself jumping on them!

SEVEN DAYS IN GRAN CANARIA

Which is the better place to admire the dunes?

If you arrive by car, I suggest you to park in Calle Finlandia (free parking spaces) in Playa del Ingles.
Near Riu Palace hotel starts the path to the dunes. This is one of the most beautiful coastal pats in Gran Canaria and the best point to admire the landscape.

If you want to make a walk you can follow this coastal path long several Kilometers until San Agustin.

When you finish to admire the dunes, you can take a relaxing break on the beach in Anfi del Mar (next to Arguineguin village).
There is a parking available for a fee (3-4 euro a day) and few free places.
Follow the indication "to the beach" and you will arrive to the most beautiful beach in Gran Canaria with white sand and palms.
You can rent a sunbed or enjoy the free beach.

TUESDAY

Gran Canaria tour

Puerto de las Nieves and Galdar

On Thursday there is the street market in Plaza de Santiago in Galdar from 9 am to 14 pm.
You can also make a brief visit of the city and the famous painted rock museum called "Cueva pintada" situated in the centre.

There are also several cheap bars and restaurants around the square.
Puerto de las Nieves, a quaint fishing village very frequented during the week-end by Canaries people. On the sea-front there are several typical see-food restaurants and bars.
A beautiful path connects to the natural swimming pool of Agaete. Unfortunately the area is very windy and the water is cold.
The most confortable way for to reach this cities is the motorway that make a tour of the east part of Gran Canaria.

WEDNESDAY

Trekking in Gran Canaria

Fataga e Roque Nublo (programme for mountain lovers).
To get to Roque Nublo from the south of Gran Canaria you can follow the indication "Tunte" or "Fataga". There is only one road with many curves and beautiful landscapes.
Fataga is a typical rural village with canary style houses (white with grey stones), narrow streets, lots of flowers, a church, a small square a restaurant serving local specialties. I tasted it during a trip to Roque Nublo, it is cheap and the portions are large. In Fataga there is only one parking that costs 1 euro for all day long (close to the only restaurant).

When you arrive to Roque Nublo you are in the center of the island. There is a small free parking when the path starts. After 5 km. you will arrive to this particular rock of 70 meter.

Gran Canaria itinerary

FRIDAY

Puerto de Mogan and Amadores beach

Every Friday the streets of the small fishing village of Puerto de Mogan are filled of stalls: the famous street market from 9.00 am to 14.00 pm.
I suggest you to leave the car at the entrance of the village where there is a big free parking or, if you prefer to travel by bus, take n. 01 or 32.

Puerto the Mogan is very beautiful with lots of colored flowers, white houses, little bridges and a port.
The local restaurants offer fresh fish. One of the better restaurant is run by the fishermen's brotherhood called "Cofradia de pescadores" situated at the end of the port.

After lunch you can take a break in the very nice and equipped beach of Amadores with white sand, clear water, lots of shops and bars. In front of the beach there is a big free parking.
If you like walking, a very beautiful coastal path of 1 km connects the Amadores beach to Puerto Rico beach.

A WEEK IN GRAN CANARIA

SATURDAY

Arucas, Firgas and Teror
These three typical villages are situated in the north close to each other, so you can visit they in the same day.

The first you will find at the exit of the motorway is ARUCAS with his street market on Saturday from 9.00 am to 14.00 pm.
The centre is develops around the big church of "San Juan Bautista".

FIRGAS is famous for his staircase of 30 mt, decorated with a fountain and colorful tiles. The square and the church of "San Roque" are the centre of the village with a beautiful view point.

TEROR is a typical Canaries village with his houses decorated with grey stones and wood terraces and the cathedral of "Virgin del Pino" the patron of the island.
The street market selling typical Canaries products is on Sunday morning.

What to see in Gran Canaria

SUNDAY

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
The capital city of Gran Canaria is a lively city situated in the north, connected to the south with the motorway GC1 or by bus n. 01-30-90-91.

As well as all big cities there is lot of traffic and it is difficult to find parking.
The historical centre is the district of "Vegueta" with the cathedral, characteristic small squares and the "house-museum of Columbus".
If you want to taste a local atmosphere, On Sunday morning (except in the summer) you can admire the typical street market of Vegueta with 400 stalls and every kind of products, while if you prefer the famous brand shops I suggest you to make a walk along the main street of "Calle Mayor"
Las Palmas has also a very long and beautiful sandy beach "Las Canteras" connected to the city centre by local buses.

These are only a small part of the principal attraction in Gran Canaria... other articles are coming soon...

Gran Canaria shopping

Things to in Gran Canaria

If during your holidays, you encounter one day with the bad weather, you can go to shopping.

Aguimes and shopping (program for shopping lovers).

Aguimes is a small typical village with several bronze statues (I have counted 37 statues), a beautiful cathedral and some bars where you can taste local food. Aguimes is famous for oil, wine, spirit and cheese products.

I suggest you to park around the village, because inside there are narrow streets without parking.
After the visit you can reach the south beaches or to make shopping in the zone of Telde (north of the airport) where there are several stores and an outlet.

  • LAS TERRAZZAS OUTLET: (motorway exit 6B). Here you can find famous brand of clothes, shoes, electronic, household, bar, restaurants... with a beautiful ocean view. The zone is windy.
  • EL MIRADOR STORE: (motorway exit 5). There is the big supermarket EROSKI and the low cost shop PRIMARK.

Travelling in TUSCANY - TOSCANA

Are you thinking about taking a vacation in Firenze, Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena, Viareggio, Isola d'Elba?

In Tuscany, on the coasts, prevail dishes based on fish as the Caciucco: famous Livornese fish soup with mussels.
The cuisine of the Tuscan inland towns is based of vegetarian dishes but that does not disdain meat including the famous Florentine steak: the meat is cut from the loin of beef.
Another speciality is the bread which the Florentines do not add salt in the dough. It is added to many savory dishes such as bruschetta: the bread is toasted with different sauces or is rubbed with fresh garlic and soaked in olive oil.

If you do not know the island, this article will be very useful, I'll give you some advice to avoid unpleasant surprises and avoid compromising your holiday.

The Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of southern Morocco. The climate is warm and dry because of the proximity to the Sahara Desert. Depending on how the trade winds are blowing, there may be more or less wind.

The closest island to the European continent is Lanzarote while the farthest is Tenerife (considering only the main 4 islands). Calculate this if you hate sitting “like a sardine” for over four hours, by taking a “No frills” airplane company.

  3. Best place to stay in gran canaria for water sport

Best place to stay in Gran Canaria for nightlife

  • No doubt: Playa del Ingles or the capital city: Las Palmas.

Best area to stay in Gran Canaria in winter

  • Best beaches for sunbathers and swimming in all seasons: the best beaches are between Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan. The most beautiful and popular beaches in this area are Playa de Amadores and Anfi Del Mar.

Playa de Amadores, Puerto Rico and Anfi del Mar beaches are perfect if you have small children because the sea slopes gently and, even if the ocean water is colder than the Mediterranean Sea, in winter you can swim or walk on the beach without the problem of the waves or the hassle of the strong wind.

To know: The beaches in Spain are always free. If you want, you can rent a sunbed and umbrella at reasonable price (about 3 euro each).

TOP 7 - GRAN CANARIA SEASIDE HOLIDAYS -

⇨ HOTEL PLAYA DEL INGLES (BEVERLY PARK). Excellent value for money. Possibility of half board or all inclusive. One of the most booked hotel in Playa del Ingles. Very close to the equipped beach.

⇨ APARTHOTEL PLAYA DEL INGLES (VERIL PLAYA). Choose this location if you want to stay close to the Dune and the wide beach. If you are looking for a tourist place with some centers dedicated to nightlife.
⇨ PLAYA INGLES ECONOMIC APARTMENTS: Apartamentos Amazonas. For those seeking an independent and economical solution near the beach.
⇨ APARTHOTEL IN PUERTO RICORio Piedras. Good value for money. Ideal for winter stays, for family with children, for sea life in every season of the year.

⇨ AMADORES HOLIDAYS: spectacular views of the ocean and Tenerife. Close to the famous beach Amadores, great for autumn-winter stays. Ideal for couples. Various facilities: sauna, gym...

A village made up of white houses with colorful flowers on the balconies. Intimate, full of restaurants, ideal for couples or for families with children.

Car Hire at Las Palmas Airport: Search and compare deals on economy cars and more.

Best place to stay in Gran Canaria for water sport

  • Best beaches for water sports: If you are an athlete, or want to try something different, you should go to the Puerto Rico Beach. Here you will find different centers offering various activities such: Parascending, Jet-ski, Jet Boat "El Diablo", Jetovator, Banana Boat.

Best spots for windsurfers and kitesurfers

    • Best beaches for windsurfers, kitesurfing: For those who love surfing, the beaches dedicated to this sport are in the: POZO IZQUIERDO or VARGAS places that are notoriously windy. In Gran Canaria there are also schools and courses to learn how to practice these activities.

BEST AREA to stay in Gran Canaria in summer

If your Vacation is between June and September it is fine also stay in Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles, Meloneras or Las Palmas but for the other months I highly recommend moving to the southwest countries because they are less windy.

Maspalomas worth a visit to see the famous sand dunes, but the beach is “open” and not protected from the wind so at least in winter I would not recommend it. The wind moves the sand that creates an annoying “mist”, it can irritate the eyes.

    Gran Canaria where to stay:

    Hotel, Apartment or Aparthotel?

1- HOTEL: The most luxurious places you can stay in the South of Gran Canaria:

Hotel in Amadores - Gloria Palace Amadores (pet friendly)
Hotel in Amadores - Gloria Palace Royal
Hotel in Puerto de Mogan - Radisson Blue resort
Hotel Meloneras (near Maspalomas, luxury resorts)
Hotel SeaSide a Maspalomas (hotel 100 meters from the sea)
      Cheap hotels in Gran Canaria:
      Taurito Area (south-west area).
Economic hotel in Playa del Ingles
2- Formula Aparthotel: the pleasure of staying in a furnished apartment and eating in the hotel's main restaurant.

3- Apartment self-catering: It is a solution very popular in the Canaries, in high demand by northern Europeans. It is usually an apartment located in a tourist complex furnished with bed linen, bath towels, water and electricity included.

A kitchenette equipped with pans and crockery and a private bathroom with shower or bath. The meals are at your expense.
For those wishing to spend less may want to consider this alternative.
It depends on the season but there are apartments available for 2 or 3 people from 265 € a week and more expensive during the pick season (Christmas, New Year, till Easter ...).

If you do not like to cook on vacation, you can go out eating, in the toristc area there are a lot of pubs and restaurants. You can buy take away food and eat in the apartment, on the beach, all around the island...

There are many restaurants that offer tourist menus affordable.
If you are intersted in this solution, cast a glance if there is availability in my apartment for rent in Puerto Rico.

          gran canaria summer holiday
          my cozy holiday apartment

4- Exclusive accommodation: For those who have special needs, in Gran Canaria you can choose between accommodation for:

Climate and temperatures in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is an island with large temperature differences between the countries of North and South and between those inland and coastal countries.
In the southwest of the island the temperature reach 30 degrees, even in winter. In the north the temperature can drop to 15-18 degrees with wind and rain. That's not the ideal climate to sea life and carve out a break in the sun in winter. Think about it before booking an accommodation.

It is interesting to see all that the island offers in its diversity, but if you want to make a holiday “sun and beach” in Gran Canaria, the best areas where to stay are in the south, even better in the countries of the southwest that are more protected from the wind.

To visit the island, I suggest to book a car directly online (to get cheap prices) and pick up the car at the airport. I always rent a car for my holidays in Gran Canaria.

To make a holiday in Gran Canaria is important to know what do you prefer.

            - Summarize -

How to make a great holiday in Gran Canaria?

            Things to Consider:
            • Season Climate /Temperature
            • Ideal beach
            • Where to stay in Gran Canaria
Accommodation : Considering another factor "Near the city center or the sea?"

I’m Italian so... I know the culture of my countrymen.

Do you know the first question Italians ask me about the apartment?
"But ... Is the apartment close to the sea?"
"Close to the sea" for an Italian means that the sea is a few centimeters from the front door, 500 meters from the sea is already outskirts.
            Each nationality has its peculiarities...
For example, my Norwegians guests prefer stay away from the chaos of the city center and love walking.
There is no better or worse but it is important to be informed and choose according to your needs.

The area of Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas is flat, suitable for those with mobility problems or does not like to walk far to get to the beach.

To know: Pay attention if you stay in Maspalomas in the "Campo international". Here you usually have to take a bus to reach the sea because access to the beach is not direct but you need to go to Playa del Ingles. In this area the apartments are small bungalows or duplex scattered in various tourist complexes. A Playa del Ingles there are mainly apartments.

            Best location in Gran Canaria

            to know:

In front of the sea there are usually luxury hotels, very beautiful but also quite expensive.

            1. Anfi del Mar is an exclusive and luxurious area and there are predominantly Hotels. The apartments are quite expensive.
            2. Amadores or Puerto Rico are hilly towns, so you must consider of going up and down the steep streets and stairways.

All these seaside resorts are very crowded in winter by foreigners, usually retired people. At the weekends and in the summer months, you'll find a local tourism: the inhabitants of the north of the island, or inland, that make a trip to the south. If you go to the beach on weekends you'll notice the difference and the huge influx of people.

TIP: Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas better in the summer months, the other places in the South are less windy and are good in all seasons.
