BEST AREA TO STAY IN MILAN FOR NIGHTLIFE

BEST AREA TO STAY IN MILAN FOR NIGHTLIFE

  • Stay in the Navigli district if you are looking for nightlife in Milan. Here you can find the most popular "cocktail bars", trendy bars and clubs.

Navigli district is a convivial area where locals gather for an aperitif or an informal dinner with friends. It is one of the most popular and crowded meeting places in Milan after 6.00pm.
The prices are affordable: with around € 10 you have a drink and a huge buffet of dishes to choose from. Here in Italy we call it "Apericena".

At the end of the day, on the bank of the Naviglio Grande there is a whole set of tables and chairs ready to host people to meeting for a drink, who enjoy their post-work relaxation in one of the most fascinating glimpses of the whole city. The accommodations here are mostly railing houses within courtyards.

BEST AREA TO STAY IN MILAN FOR NIGHTLIFE

I stayed a night in an apartment on Naviglio view right above the premises where happy hour is held. The atmosphere is suggestive but the night is quite noisy especially on weekends for this advice to choose an accommodation located in a courtyard that has the most "sheltered" room to avoid hearing people talking all night long .

You'll like Milan, it's very charming and cosmopolitan.

BEST AREA TO STAY IN MILAN ON A BUDGET

In Milan there are plenty of accommodations, for all budgets.
Closer you get to the city center (Duomo), the prices will increase.

On average, basic accommodation does NOT cost less than € 100 a night per a double room.
The cheapest accommodations in Milan are the hostels which also offer private rooms and not just a dormitory bed.

Where should I stay when visiting Milan?

Milan Central Train Station

If you arrive or leave by train, you will be comfortable to look for an accommodation near the Milan train station.

Here my tip:

Hotel Ada - a short walk from the Central Station.

Booking.com Let's see together the description of the various areas that you can reach or where to stay even if many of them are not exactly economic:

  • Best area Milan for nightlife: Navigli

Stay in the Navigli district if you are looking for a young area of Milan, for the Fiori sul Naviglio event, Milan Choco Week and for the street antiques market.

Stay here if you are looking for Milan nightlife, the most popular "cocktail bars" and young people.

Where should I stay when visiting Milan?

This area has recently been redeveloped, on the occasion of the Expo, now it is invaded by young people. Modern area with various clubs, many bars and restaurants pleasant to walk along the streets parallel to the Naviglio.
In December you can find the Santa Claus Village and the floating ice skating rink.

👉 I recommend the Milano Navigli Apartment a stone's throw from the canals, but out of the chaos of nightlife.

  • Best neighborhood in Milan for design, art and creativity: Brera

  • Brera the Montmartre in Milan.

Stay in Brera for the Salone del Mobile, stay close to the Academy of Arts, visit the Brera market which takes place every third Sunday of the month.

Milan's most bohemian neighborhood of design, art and creativity is at home here in Milan. If you have an artistic soul I suggest you stay in Brera among art galleries, antique shops and clubs frequented mostly by artists.

Brera district photo is offered to TripAdvisor.

Brera is one of the nightlife districts in Milan (like Navigli, Corso Como ...) you will always find people who crowd the alleys and the clubs. A tourist area but that keeps its charm.
Pleasant atmosphere especially walking in the evening among the narrow pedestrian streets.
Stay here if you are looking for an authentic place with a romantic aftertaste.

👉 Recommended apartment in the Brera area

  • Milan Tortona district

Another lively area of Milan, the central hub of Milan Design Week. To see the Museum of Cultures ( Mudec ). The streets are always full so it is not strange that in this area several rooms have arisen that serve international cuisine and contribute to stir up the trendy atmosphere of Tortona.

If you plan to participate in the "Fuorisalone fair" stay here.

👉 Hotel near the Mudec

  • Best neighborhood in Milan for tourists: Duomo

In the heart of the fashion capital. Stay here for Christmas Markets, Milan Film Festival, shopping.

Best area to stay in Milan for Christmas
Milan city center is offered to TripAdvisor.

Stay in the center of Milan if you want to stay close to the "La Scala" theater and go shopping: on the side of the Duomo there are numerous stores including the famous "Rinascente" (go up to the top floor you will find the food area and a bar from where it is possible to have a coffee from the panoramic terrace enjoying a beautiful view of the Duomo).

👉 Studio in Milan Center, 1.3 km from the Duomo and the Quadrilatero della Moda.

Where should I stay in Milan to see architectural buildings?

  • Milan Castello Sforzesco and the cathedral of Milan: il Duomo.

In this area, right in the space in front of the entrance to the Sforzesco castle, the famous Christmas market 2019, OBej - OBej will take place! Date: 5 to 8 December 2019.

If you are looking for a place full of restaurants and bars where you can sip a cocktail at sunset overlooking Arco della Pace or towards Castello Sforzesco, you must stay in Corso Sempione: a kilometer avenue full of restaurants of all kinds and for all budgets. This area is very lively in the evening because of the pubs offering aperitifs.

The Sforzesco castle is gorgeous and well kept. Absolutely to visit (at least the outside and the inner courtyard which are freely accessible).
Council, to enjoy Milan, a walk on foot from the Duomo to here (or vice versa). Inside the castle there are various museums.

👉 Accommodation with views of Piazza Castello

  • Best area to stay in Milan for shopping

Stay in Milan Citylife for "Milan Food week fair" and shopping.

CityLife Shopping District, located in the area of the former city fair is a shopping district where you can admire spectacular skyscrapers, modern buildings and a city park for those who want to take a walk in the countryside: one of the most innovative and representative neighborhoods of the revolution has affected Milan in the last decade.

Read more about Best neighborhood in Milan for shopping (there are a lot of places good for shopping in Milan).

  • Best neighborhood in Milan for Fair and exhibitions

Stay near Fiera Milano city

Book an accommodation here, if you want or you have to attend a fair. The most famous are the festival of the East, and the BIT 2020.

Stay close to the Milan city fair (the bigger is the Rho fairgrounds) if you take part in one of the many events that take place in this exhibition space.

Fiera Milano City is easily accessible by public transport with the M5 underground line: Portello stop.

Recommended accommodation 30 meters from the metro:
👉Stay in the Fiera Milano City area

  • Best areas to stay in Milan for fashion addicted

Milan's fashion district. Made up of the Via della Spiga, Via Manzoni, Via Sant'Andrea and Via Montenapoleone, the Quadrilatero della Moda.

The Quadrilatero della Moda is an area dedicated to luxury shopping located in the historic city center. The famous Via Monte Napoleone is lined with high-fashion boutiques, the most famous and exclusive brands can be found here along with antique shops and elegant cafes housed in neoclassical palaces. Luxury cars parked in this street give an idea of the main customers who visit these boutiques.

👉 Hotel near Montenapoleone. This area is also perfect for shopping. You'll find brands like: Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Ralph Lauren.

Nearby, the museum of Palazzo Morando displays period costumes, while the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum is dedicated to the decorative arts of the Renaissance period.

  • Best neighborhoods for food and restaurants: Isola

Stay here to visit the Gae Aulenti square, the vertical forest and stay near the Garibaldi FS train station.

One of the newest and most modern districts of Milan that stands near the Garibaldi FS train station adjacent to Corso Como: a lively street full of restaurants and clubs.

Isola, a science fiction district. Leaving Porta Garibaldi, the exclusive skyscrapers and buildings like those of the Bosco Verticale with balconies full of greenery are immediately visible.
A photo in Piazza Gae Aulenti surrounded by skyscrapers and fountains is a Must.
👉 Recommended apartment in the Isola neighborhood

To reach this part of Milan, or move to other areas, it is necessary to use the purple subway line: modern and completely automatic (without driver).
Residential area, quite safe and perfect for reaching other areas of Milan.

  • Best zone Milan for cheaper accommodation: Città studi

One of the university districts of Milan.

A more informal climate can be found in Città studi, the area is mostly frequented by students.

Città Studi is an excellent choice for travelers interested in well organized public transport, architecture and historical centers, as well as the numerous universities that are located in the area.

In this post: Monza, Vigevano, Pavia, Soncino, Bellagio, Zavattarello.
In the second post about places to see near Milano: Visit Crespi D'Adda, Bergamo, Como Lake villas, Visit Castles near Milan, Isola Bella, Lake Maggiore, Visit Iseo Lake e Montisola.

Places near Milan to visit

1. Monza: 18 km from the Lombardy chief city.

A lovely town to visit near Milano is Monza and its Cathedral.
The historical city center is an ideal place for a walk among the little shops and coffee bars, often crowded, in which it is nice to stop for a fast break.

Places near Milan to visit
Monza city center
Apart from the historical center I advise you to see the "Villa Reale" and its huge and famous "Monza Park" where it is possible, weather permitting, to have a picnic, rent a bike, see the racetrack where the Formula 1 Grand Prix takes place.
It is the ideal place if you looking for "nature" near Milan.

Monza is close to Milan. You can reach it by public transport or by car. I recommend visiting this city you will not be disappointed.

DAY TRIPS FROM MILAN

2. Vigevano: 50km from Milan.

Duomo: Vigevano square

The Ducal square, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, lies in the medieval city of Vigevano. To best admire it, you are advised to climb the Tower of Bramante. The 100 steps to arrive at the top and see the panorama below are worth the effort. From the Ducal Square you can access the castle of the Sforzas, still under restoration; the riding stables and the gardens are accessible and are worth a visit just to relax in a Renaissance location.

WHAT TO SEE NEAR MILAN

3. The Versailles of the Lombardy

Chignolo Castle, Pavia: 60 km from the downtown of Milan.

If you want to spend the afternoon admiring Tiepolo's frescoes, the Procacci Castle is the place for you. The castle it is not well known (it is a private property and often used as wedding location) but in spite of this it's worth a visit: it is big, monumental and the interior rooms are well preserved. The visits are guided.

Short trips from Milan

4. SONCINO

Soncino, Cremona: 70 km from Milan Central station.

posti da visitare in Lombardia
Soncino Castle by night

You're going to see over the small village in Soncino, the beautiful and majestic Rocca Sforzesca, the basement, the mill and the Museum of printing. Visit the castle costs 5€ (2017 prices) without guidance. The castle is empty inside but is well preserved.

TIP: to enjoy the medieval climate you can arrange a visit to Soncino medieval fantasy festival that occurs once every year or make a "night visit" to the Dungeon of the fortress. Very impressive.
cities near Milan
Beautiful Cremona
If you want to prolong your tour, you can visit the city of Cremona with its beautiful churches: the baptistery, the Cathedral, the monastery, the Cathedral square and, for enthusiasts, the Museum of the violin.

TOURS AND TRIPS FROM MILAN

5. Bellagio

Bellagio: 70 km from Milan Central station.

Bellagio is a tourist country and therefore quite expensive. Car park (few), restaurants and entrance to Villa Melzi are not the cheapest. However, if you want to enjoy a romantic day, with your partner, a visit to this country is required (you can also arrive by ferry).

Bellagio what to see:

1. The Villa Melzi gardens in the months in which they are open long, are worth a visit. Different varieties of plants and flowers make the Park a very relaxing place, colorful, fragrant and pleasant. Nice panoramic view of the Lake.

Lago di Como
Photo: Pinterest: Bellagio.
2. Basilica di San Giacomo Romanesque church with Baroque notes due to a remodel done in that period with various works of art inside. You will see it walking through the Center.

3. Villa Serbelloni on tour of villa Serbelloni provides only a visit to the Park and not the building. The visit is only accessible with a guide. The beauty lies in glimpses and views that can be seen from the top of the park. The guided tour is on foot and takes about 1 hour.

4. Navigating Lake Como. In front of Bellagio, on the other side of the Lake of Como, there are 2 villas that recommend you visit: Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta (the first one I loved more than the second). If you want to prolong your visit you can take a boat to visit Lake Como and the famous villas.

More info in this post:

SHORT TOUR FROM MILAN

6. ZAVATTARELLO

Zavattarello, Pavia: 90 km from Milan Central.

You can spend an enjoyable Sunday in the heart of Oltrepo Pavese strolling in the streets of the old town of Zavattarello with an additional visit to Verme Castle found on a promontory with a beautiful and relaxing view which is lost among vineyards and hills.

Unfortunately this castle was completely burned down during the Second World War but was subsequently reconstructed and now is now fully open from late March to the beginning of April every year.

The guided tour of the castle takes around 1 hour.
Foto da Pinterest. Castello del Verme, Pavia.
TIP: To drop even more in the medieval atmosphere, you can attend to the "medieval days" where is possible attend like a spectator to the historical evocation. Usually this event is held on the 15th of August - a public holiday. There are many interesting events planned as the "the mystery tour", concerts and shows ...
